Recipe from Weber's Charcoal Grilling™
Featured on September 03, 2010
1 large red bell pepper
1 large yellow bell pepper
1 medium jalapeño chile pepper
1 medium red onion
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 teaspoon fennel seed
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup beer
2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
5 fresh bratwurst, preferably Johnsonville®
5 large hot dog buns
1. Fill a chimney starter to the rim with charcoal and burn the charcoal until it is lightly covered with ash. Spread the charcoal in a tightly packed, single layer across one-half of the charcoal grate. Put the cooking grate in place, close the lid, and let the charcoal burn down to medium heat (350° to 450°F). Leave all the vents open.
If you are using a gas grill, preheat your grill on high until it reaches 500°F and then adjust the burners to medium heat (350° to 450°F).
2. Remove and discard the stems and seeds from the bell peppers and jalapeño pepper. Cut the bell peppers lengthwise into 1/3-inch strips. Finely chop the jalapeño pepper. Cut the onion in half through the stem and root ends. Cut each half crosswise into 1/4-inch slices.
3. Brush the cooking grates clean. In a large disposable foil pan over direct medium heat, melt the butter. Add the peppers, onion, fennel seed, salt, and pepper. Mix well with tongs. Cook the vegetables in the pan over direct medium heat, with the lid closed as much as possible, until they are tender and turn golden brown in spots, 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the vegetables brown too quickly, slide the pan over indirect heat and cook them there, with the lid closed.
4. When the vegetables are tender, add the beer and mustard. Mix well with tongs. Slide the pan over indirect heat to keep warm.
5. Grill the bratwurst over direct medium heat, with the lid closed as much as possible, until lightly charred on all sides, about 15 minutes, turning them every few minutes and swapping their positions as needed for even cooking. Then move the bratwurst to the pan over indirect heat. Smother them with the peppers and onion, close the lid, and cook until the bratwurst are fully cooked, about 10 to 15 minutes. If the pan is getting too dry, add a little more beer.
6. Serve the bratwurst warm in the buns with the spicy pepper mixture on top.

NASCAR Sprint Cup May Include Kentucky in 2011
By pistolpete on Jul 13, 2010 | In Uncategorized | Send feedback »
Some 2011 schedule speculation: UPDATE: It appears more likely than ever the 2011 Sprint Cup slate will have a much different look than it has in recent seasons. NASCAR acknowledged both SMI and ISC have requested realignment date changes for next year, and there are reports Kentucky and a second date for Las Vegas will be part of the SMI plan, at the expense of races in New Hampshire and Atlanta, and Kansas will gain a second NASCAR weekend when Auto Club Speedway gets stripped of its February date.(CBS Sports)(7-5-2010)
UPDATE: Topics being discussed include shuffling the last 11 dates of the season so different venues could promote Chase races on a revolving basis. Another issue is geography and bouncing between coasts. While the Sprint Cup schedule is likely not to be shortened any time soon, the Nationwide schedule is under review. And by 2012, some Truck and NNS dates could move to weeknight shows. Certainly, the six tracks that have been mentioned as possible candidates for realignment include Kansas, Auto Club Speedway, Las Vegas, Atlanta, New Hampshire and Kentucky. At this point, it's up to the track owners to determine what they're willing to give up to make something happen. From an attendance standpoint, Fontana and Atlanta could both stand to lose a race. Time will tell whether Speedway Motorsports Inc. Chairman Bruton Smith is serious about taking a date from New Hampshire - the only track that serves the New England area. The Fontana spring date is likely to fall, but what to put in its place? Phoenix is likely to move to an earlier date. One thing is for certain, Homestead-Miami Speedway stands to lose a chunk of change if the season finale is moved from that track. Ford has a contract to be the title sponsor through 2014 - but only if it's the last race of the season. An alternative placement for Las Vegas could be in the kick off position for the Chase, replacing the first race of the playoffs, which is currently being held in New Hampshire.(Fox Sports) to see what tracks have already confirmed their dates for next year, check out my 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 'tentative' Schedule page.(7-6-2010)

Might Matt Kenseth Get His Old Crew Chief Back?
By pistolpete on Jun 28, 2010 | In Uncategorized | Send feedback »
Reiser to return as Kenseth's crew chief? Loomis moving to Roush? Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody has learned that Robbie Reiser is likely to return as crewchief for Matt Kenseth's #17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford next season. Team owner Jack Roush pulled veteran Jimmy Fennig out of Roush Fenway's R&D Department to replace Todd Parrott as crew chief last week, the second change of the season for the #17 team. Fennig is Kenseth's fifth crewchief since 2007, and said last week that he expects to remain atop the pit box for the remainder of the 2010 campaign. Sources tell Sirius Speedway that there is "a very strong possibility" that RFR General Manager Robbie Reiser will return to the post in 2011. "Robbie wants to come back," said one source on condition of anonymity, "but he's doing such a good job as GM that Jack can't justify making a move right now. Next season, expect to see Reiser back on the pit box, with Robbie Loomis succeeding him as General Manager." Kenseth admitted that consideration is being given to bringing Reiser back as crewchief, saying, "He probably would have filled in for the rest of the year (and tried) to do both, but there just are not enough hours in a day."(Sirius Speedway)(6-28-2010)

NASCAR Sprint Cup to Kentucky?
By pistolpete on Jun 23, 2010 | In Uncategorized | Send feedback »
The owner of New Hampshire Motor Speedway said Thursday he will consider moving next year's summer race if Loudon's police chief doesn't cut the cost for providing safety details. NHMS owner Bruton Smith said that if he can't reach a compromise with the town on security costs, he may move next June's race from New Hampshire [like to maybe...Kentucky Speedway?]. "The dates are scheduled year to year with contracts with NASCAR," said Jerry Gappens, NHMS vice president. "There is the option of doing that. Let's hope it doesn't come to that option." Gappens said Loudon charges too much to organize security, and Loudon's police chief makes too much doing it. He said Chief Robert Fiske makes $50 per hour, amounting to almost $59,000 for covering the races over five years. NHMS is asking Loudon to reduce its price tag for June's upcoming race from $170,000 to $65,000. "No, we're not prepared to do that," said Loudon Selectman Roger Maxfield. "The answer is no, we won't." Maxfield said he thinks $170,000 to cover an influx of 100,000 people is reasonable, as is Fiske's hourly rate. "He's also in control of 80 full-time officers, so that's a large detail," Maxfield said. NHMS has suggested cutting 38 police officers from its camp grounds and replacing them with private security guards supported by a few officers. Fiske said that plan isn't in the best interest of public safety. "The crime is consistent with a city of that size," he said. "We have alleged rapes and assaults, let alone the DWIs."(wmur.com)(6-18-2010)
